Guilty Barbra Streisand & Barry Gibb
Sometimes, our favourite rockers and their fans get so excited at a gig that things get a bit out of hand... But what's the craziest thing that's happened onstage?
During their 1992 VMA performance of “Lithium”, Krist Novoselic threw his bass in the air hoping to catch it. Unfortunately, the bass landed right down on his head, giving him near-concussion and leading him to stagger awkwardly off stage… right before drummer Dave Grohl took the mic and gave Axl Rose an awkward shout-out. Ah, to be alive in the '90s.
This pop icon has always pushed fashion to the limits, but the Meat Dress was definitely her most provocative look to date. Gaga inspired shock from the audience as she strutted onstage to accept the award for Video of the Year for "Bad Romance" at the 2010 VMAs, wearing a dress, boots, hat and purse composed of raw meat. The outfit was enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame one year later.
During his set at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Jimi Hendrix placed his guitar on the ground and lit it on fire with lighter fluid. Apparently, the stunt was very artistic and dramatic. However, the rocker also had to be hospitalised for burns.
At the 2002 VMAs, MJ thought that he was accepting an Artist of the Millennium trophy, as Britney Spears used this very tribute in her introduction. The King of Pop proceeded to launch into a heartfelt thank-you speech for the imaginary award, which was then spoofed by Jack Black during the 2003 VMA's. Whoops!
On 18 June 2004, Bowie, 57, was doing a show at the Norwegian Wood Festival in Oslo when a crowd member suddenly through a lollipop onstage, lodging itself between Bowie’s eyeball and eye socket. That’s got to hurt…
During The Who’s 1973 tour of Quadrophenia, drummer Keith Moon started to vomit just before the show. The rock star then passed out, slumped over his drums halfway through their anthem “Won’t Get Fooled Again”. Guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend then asked the crowd, “Can anybody play the drums?”, and 19-year-old fan Scot Halpin took to the stage and played drums with the band for the rest of the show! Now that’s one to write home about…
During some of their ‘90s gigs, the Chili Peppers played live in the nude, leading at one time to Flea’s arrest for obscenity. Apparently they used socks to cover up the essentials!
During his 1969 Toronto show, Alice Cooper let a chicken loose into the crowd. He claimed in interviews that he thought it would be able to fly, but the chicken fell into the crowd where it was dismembered by fans. Eww.
During a 1999 VMA performance, Diana Ross approached Lil Kim onstage and fondled her breast. Lil Kim was wearing an adhesive flower to cover part of her breast and Motown icon Diana Ross apparently felt it was “grab-worthy.” Delightful!
In 1980, during a gig with Black Sabbath, someone threw a bat up at Ozzy Osbourne. Believing that the bat was rubber, he picked up the bat and bit its head off. Don’t try this at home, kids…
