Knowing Me Knowing You ABBA
To celebrate David Cassidy's 65th birthday (April 12, 2015), we take a look at his life and career to date.
David Cassidy was born in New York City on April 12, 1950. As his parents were frequently touring on the road, he spent his early years being raised by his maternal grandparents in New Jersey. In 1956, he found out from neighbors' children that his parents had been divorced for over two years and had not told him.
In 1968, after completing one final session of summer school to obtain credits necessary to get a high school diploma, David Cassidy moved with his half-brothers. He remained there seeking fame as an actor and musician while simultaneously working half-days in the mailroom of a textile firm. He moved out when his career began to pick up.
In 1969, Cassidy made his professional debut in the Broadway musical The Fig Leaves Are Falling. A casting director saw the show and asked Cassidy to make a screen test. In 1969, he moved to Los Angeles.
Cassidy signed with Universal Studios in 1969 and in 1970, he took the part of Keith Partridge in The Partridge Family. Cassidy persuaded the makers of the show to allow him to sing and "I Think I Love You" became a hit, allowing Cassidy to pursue his music dreams.
Within the first year of making music, Cassidy had produced his own single, ‘Cherish’, which reached number nine in the US and number two in the UK. Cassidy dreamt of being a rock star but he took on the role of a teen idol. In previous interviews, he has suggested he hated this term.
Cassidy's first wife was actress Kay Lenz, who is divorced in the mid-80s. He married his second wife Meryl Tanz (pictured) in 1984.However, it wasn’t to last and they split up a year or so later.
David Cassidy married Sue Shifrin in 1991, however, it was confirmed in 2013 that the couple were separated, with Shifrin filing for divorce in February 2014.
