Born in Detroit, it's rumoured Freda auditioned for Motown records in her teens. However she moved to New York in 1963 and forged a career as a respected jazz singer and sometime Broadway performer. In 1969, she was persuaded to return to Detroit to record for former Motown writers Holland-Dozier-Holland's Invictus Records and had the world-wide smash with 'Band Of Gold'. Freda had more hits in the USA but was considered a one hit wonder in the UK.
