Can't Get By Without You The Real Thing
Every relationship goes through ups and downs and band members are no different. Read the stories behind some of music's famous feuds.
In 2010 Richards published his autobiography in which he called Jagger’s manhood “a tiny dodger”. Jagger demanded an apology before he would tour with The Rolling Stones again. Describing how he apologised, Richards said in an interview, "We resolved it, in our own way, you know. I said I regret if I caused you any, you know, inconvenience or pain, or something. I'd say anything to get the band together, you know? I'd lie to my mother.”
These two had a very public fallout shortly before the release of their Grammy Award winning album ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water'. It was rumoured that Simon was frustrated that Garfunkel was getting credit for songs that Simon had written. They have since put differences aside to perform together several times but the pair have never recorded new material.
The story goes that Don showed up drunk to a gig in 1973 and Phil got so frustrated with his brother’s sloppy performance, he walked off-stage. Then Don told the audience that they were finished. They reunited 10 years later for a tour but spoke little after that. Phil Everly passed away in 2014 and following his death Don said, “I think about him every day. I always thought about him every day, even when we were not speaking to each other.”
Although many fans blame Yoko Ono for the break up of The Beatles, McCartney has said, “she certainly didn't break the group up, the group was breaking up". When the band split in 1970, the two musicians took swipes at each other in the press and Lennon released ‘How Do You Sleep’ apparently aimed at McCartney. The lyrics read: “The only thing you did was ‘Yesterday’”. Ouch! Paul has said since that the two were working on patching things up before Lennon’s death.
The Californian band has a long history of battles particularly around who exactly owns the name of the band. In 2012, rumours were rife that Mike Love fired Brian Wilson and other members from the band following their exclusion from a Beach Boys tour. Although Love denied this saying “We are partners. He’s my cousin by birth and my brother in music,” Love is on tour in 2015 under the Beach Boys name with a substitute band.
