Streetlife Randy Crawford & The Crusaders
There have been some beautiful lyrics in the Smooth canon of songs, and here we celebrate some of the very best!
"There was something in the air that night, the stars were bright, Fernando. They were shining there for you and me, for liberty, Fernando. Though we never thought that we could lose, there's no regret, Fernando. If I had to do the same again, I would, my friend, Fernando" - Fernando was Abba's best-selling single ever. It sold 6,000,000 copies in 1976 alone.
"The storms are raging on the rolling sea, and on the highway of regret. The winds of change are blowing wild and free, you ain't seen nothing like me yet. I could make you happy, make your dreams come true. Nothing that I wouldn't do. Go to the ends of the Earth for you, to make you feel my love" - Not by Adele herself, but Bob Dylan, the haunting Make You Feel My Love was one of her breakthrough singles on first album 19.
"Hey Jude, don't let me down, you have found her, now go and get her. Remember to let her into your heart, then you can start to make it better" - Hey Jude spent nine weeks at No 1 in the US upon its release in 1968 and has sold approximately 10 million copies worldwide.
"I know your eyes in the morning sun, I feel you touch me in the pouring rain. And the moment that you wander far from me, I wanna feel you in my arms again." - How Deep Is Your Love has been in many Greatest Singles lists and was voted The Nation's Favourite Bee Gees Song by ITV viewers.
"Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you are near? Just like me, they long to be, close to you" - Some of the most famous opening lyrics ever, Close To You was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal James. It stayed at No 1 in the US for four weeks.
"And you, you can be mean, and I, I'll drink all the time. 'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact. Yes we're lovers, and that is that. Though nothing will keep us together, we could steal time, just for one day... We can be heroes, for ever and ever." - Bowie was detoxing in Berlin when he saw two lovers meet beneath a guard turret in the Berlin wall. From this glimpse emerged the beautiful, doom-loved Heroes.
"If I was a sculptor, but then again, no. Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show... I know it's not much but it's the best I can do, my gift is my song and this one's for you." - Your Song was placed at No 137 on Rolling Stone's '137 Greatest Songs of All Time'.
"Like a river flows surely to the sea, darling so it goes: some things are meant to be. Take my hand, take my whole life too, for I can't help falling in love with you." - The melody to one of Elvis' most famous and seductive songs, Can't Help Falling In Love With You, is based on Plaisir d'amour, an eighteenth century French love song by Jean Paul Egide Martini.
"It's only me who wants to wrap around your dreams... And have you any dreams you'd like to sell?" - Dreams was the only US No 1 for Fleetwood Mac where it sold over a million copies. It was written by Stevie Nicks whilst herself and guitarist Lindsay Buckingham were ending their eight-year relationship.
"Tonight the music seems so loud, I wish that we could lose this crowd. Maybe it's better this way, we'd hurt each other with the things we want to say. We could have been so good together, we could have lived this dance forever." - Careless Whisper, about a lover's guilt after a betrayal, went to No 1 in almost 25 countries and remains one of Michael's most famous songs.
"Grow old along with me, two branches of one tree. Face the setting sun, when the day is done." - John Lennon's Grow Old With Me wasn't quite as well-known as Imagine but held a simple romance to its image-laden lyrics.
"And in my dreams I've kissed your lips a thousand times. I sometimes see you pass outside my door: Hello! Is it me you're looking for?" - A staple of phone-call jokes the world over, Hello is also regularly voted one of the most romantic songs in the world, by smooth crooner Lionel.
"Let me take you home, to keep you safe and warm. Till the early dawn warms up to the sun. It would be so nice, if only for one night." - Luther Vandross pleads with his unrequited love in the heart-aching If Only For One Night.
"Ain't no mountain high enough, ain't no valley low enough, ain't no river wide enough, to keep me from getting to you babe." - The original Marvin Gaye / Temi Terrell version of Ain't No Mountain High Enough was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
"You're a mystery, you're from outer space, you're every minute of my everyday. And I can't believe that I'm your man, and I get to kiss you baby just because I can." - Buble wrote the lyrics of Everything for his then girlfriend Emily Blunt, about the great happiness of real love.
"[Barbra:] And baby I remember all the things you taught me [Neil:] I learned how to laugh and I learned how to cry [Barbra:] Well, I learned how to love and I learned how to lie [Neil:] So you think I could learn how to tell you goodbye [Barbra:] So you think I could learn how to tell you goodbye, you don't bring me flowers anymore..." - Neil and Barbra Streisand's ballad You Don't Bring Me Flowers topped charts around the world in 1978.
"Every time you go away you take a piece of me with you" - Paul Young's 80s hit Every Time You Go Away remains a poignant call of the heart to this day.
"I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school. Or steal my daddy's cue and make a living out of playing pool. Or find myself a rock and roll band that needs a helpin' hand. Oh Maggie I wish I'd never seen your face, you made a first-class fool out of me. But I'm as blind as a fool can be. You stole my heart but I love you anyway." - Rod's Maggie May went to No 1 for 5 weeks on the UK charts and simultaneously topped the US charts in 1971. It's lyrics of unbalanced love still
