8 Facts You Never Knew About Elkie Brooks
She holds the title for having more albums that have reached the top 75 of the UK album charts than any other singer.
1. Fact One
Elkie’s real name is actually Elaine Bookbinder. She was convinced to change her name by music manager Don Arden who renamed her Elaine Mansfield but she hated it so she picked the Yiddish name Elkie and shortened her original surname.
2. Fact Two
During the 1960s, she worked extensively on Britain’s cabaret scene and even supported The Beatles at their Christmas show in London. Despite her success, she told The Express "that decade was not the nicest time for me".
3. Fact Three
Her first solo album in 1975 ‘Rich Man’s Woman’ was heavily criticised for its racy front cover where she posed naked but for a feather boa.

She calls her fans ‘Elkaholics’.

In 2003, she took part in ITV reality show ‘Reborn In The USA’ which saw British artists try to break it in the US. Other contestants included Michelle Gayle, Gina G and Tony Hadley who was the overall winner. She said of the experience: "I thought it’d be far better than it was."

1n 1998, Elkie’s accountant informed her that he hadn’t been paying her taxes. She had to sell her home to clear her debts and move her family into a mobile home. She told The Express: "If I had all the royalties I’m due from the record companies I’ve recorded with over the years, I’d probably be a very wealthy woman. I’ve tried to pursue them, but you get so far and it’s so expensive that you just throw your arms up in the air."
