Omar Sharif

Omar Sharif, star of such classic films as Dr Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia, has died aged 83.

According to his agent, the much-revered legend of celluloid passed away of a heart attack in Cairo, Egypt, last Friday. An Egyptian national, Sharif stayed true to his country until death.

He rose to fame in David Lean's epic 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia and became one of the few actors from the Arab world to gain success in Hollywood. He was nominated for an Oscar in his role in the film and won a Golden Globe.

Lawrence would go on to work with Lean again in the equally epic adaptation of Boris Pasternak's Dr Zhivago. Sharif again won a Golden Globe for his role as Zhivago in that film.

Twitter has gone into mourning for the star, with many expressing their grief at his passing:

James Cameron-Wilson, the executive editor of the Film Review Annual, said Sharif was "probably the most famous Egyptian since Tutankhamen... A real screen legend."

RIP Omar.
