Music legend Stevie Wonder was among 18 recipients of the 2014 Presidential Medal of Freedom.
President Barack Obama said this year's recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom made the world stronger, wiser and more beautiful.
He called Wonder a musical prodigy whose warmth and humanity can be heard in every note of his music.
"For more than 50 years, Stevie has channelled his inner visions into messages of hope, healing and becoming one of the most influential musicians in American history," he said. "A musical prodigy. An electrifying voice."
Obama praised the 18 artists, activists and politicians receiving the award at a White House ceremony on Monday (November 24).
Actress Meryl Streep was among the recipients, with Obama saying her talent is so immense that she "has no peers."
