Procol Harum Versus Annie Lennox

A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harum

A Whiter Shade Of Pale was the first song Procol Harum recorded. After it became a huge hit, they fired their original drummer and guitarist, replacing them with Barry Wilson and Robin Trower. They were more experienced musicians who were up to the pressure of touring. We can’t help but feel sorry for the originals though!

In June 1967, this version went to number one in the UK and stayed there for six weeks. It reached number five in America without much promotion.

A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox released her cover of A Whiter Shade Of Pale in 1995. Taken from her album Medusa, it reached number sixteen in the UK and hit #16 in the UK.

This version features in the 1995 film The Net, starring Sandra Bullock.

Best Version? No question, it has to be Procol Harum.
