The Smooth Sanctuary With Paul Phear 6pm - 10pm
We've selected six of the best ‘America’ songs, featuring Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond and Simon and Garfunkel.
To celebrate Independence Day on 4th July, we are hosting the Great American Songbook Day – every song we play between 6am and midnight will be a song from an American artist!
Released in 1984, Born In The U.S.A is one of Springsteen's best-known singles.
Taken from their fourth studio album, Bookends, the song was later issued as a single in 1972 to promote the release of Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits. The song was written by Paul Simon and is regarded as one of his best songs.
Neil Diamond recorded ‘America’ in 1980 as part of The Jazz Singer soundtrack album. The song was a hit single in the US in 1981, reaching number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. Although the single version was a studio recording, it sounds live because of crowd overdubs in the song.
‘Living In America’ was released in 1985 and became a top five hit in the UK, peaking at number five; it was his only top 10 single in the UK. In 1986, it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song and won Brown a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Recorded and released on the American Pie album in 1971, the single was a number-one US hit for four weeks in 1972. In the UK, it reached No. 2 on its original 1972 release and a re-issue in 1991 reached No. 12.
‘Kids in America’ was released in 1981 and was Wilde’s debut single. It reached #2 in the UK Singles Chart.
