"It’s a dream come true" - Carole King on the opening night of Beautiful.
The Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Carole King made a surprise appearance on stage at the Aldwych Theatre in London to mark the show's West End opening.
The legendary Carole King reduced cast members to tears when she joined them on stage at the end of the opening night of a new musical about her life.
The singer-songwriter, embraced Katie Brayben, who plays her in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and told the audience the show had been 'spectacular'.
She also paid a moving tribute to her ex-husband and lyricist Gerry Goffin, who died last year and with whom she wrote more than 50 hits, including Will You Love Me Tomorrow, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Up on the Roof and the dance number The Locomotion.
"He would have loved this tonight," she told the cast. "You did him proud."
The show, which tells the story of King's rise from Brooklyn schoolgirl to music superstar, is already a hit on Broadway and has won two Tony Awards.
King herself brought the curtain call to an end by leading the cast in a rendition of one of her best known hits, You've Got A Friend.
Smooth Radio's Kevin Hughes spoke to King after the opening show, where she said, "I've been over here [UK] many times and I know people love the songs but to have them presented in such a marvellously crafted vehicle with such gifted performers is just something I never dared dream of - it's a dream come true."
Beautiful - The Carole King Musical runs until 13 June 2015 at the Aldwych Theatre. To book tickets, visit beautifulinlondon.co.uk.
