Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson were together for more than 15 years, after first meeting in 1993 while performing on stage, and their relationship continued until 2009, when Natasha died following a skiing accident.
They married in 1994 and went on to build a life together, raising two sons before Natasha’s death on March 18, 2009, which was caused by a brain injury sustained during the accident.

Their relationship began during the Broadway revival of Anna Christie in 1993. Within a year, they had married and later welcomed their sons, Micheál and Daniel.
Speaking years later, Liam reflected on how the family coped after Natasha’s death. In an interview with People in October 2024, he said, “It was a horrible thing to happen,” adding that his main focus was making sure his teenage sons “were okay.”
A Meeting on Stage
Their relationship can be traced back to Natasha’s efforts to bring Anna Christie to Broadway.
Having previously appeared in the play in London, she reportedly encouraged Liam to take on the role of the Irish sailor. “I think [playwright Eugene] O'Neill wrote that part for Liam Neeson,” she told the Los Angeles Times in January 1993.
When the production opened on January 14, 1993, it received strong reviews. The New York Times described Natasha’s performance as “what may prove to be the performance of the season,” and also highlighted the “sensitive partnering she receives” from Liam.
At the time, Natasha was married to producer Robert Fox, while Liam had previously been in relationships including one with Helen Mirren.
Looking back in a 2014 interview with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes, Liam described their connection:
“I'd never had that kind of an explosive chemistry situation with an actor or actress,” he said. “She and I were like [Fred] Astaire and [Ginger] Rogers. We had just this wonderful kind of dance, free dance on stage every night, you know?”
Love Amid Complicated Timing
Shortly after the production ended, Natasha separated from Robert Fox. She later spoke about how her relationship with Liam began during a difficult period.
“Working with him, what happened between us, and that becoming public knowledge in conjunction with my marriage falling apart, was kind of bad timing,” she told the New York Daily News in an interview released after her death.
“So what can I say? Obviously, I fell very much in love with him.” Their relationship continued to develop while Liam was filming Schindler’s List in Poland.
For Natasha’s 30th birthday, he sent her a card signed “Lots of love, Oskar.” When she questioned whether the message sounded too distant, it clarified his feelings.
“That was when I knew I really loved this person,” Liam said. “I thought, 'This is real and genuine and is something that has to be protected.' ”
From Red Carpets to Marriage
By June 1993, they made their relationship public with an appearance at the Tony Awards.
The following year, Liam was considered for the role of James Bond — a possibility Natasha reacted strongly to. “Darling, if you're offered James Bond and you're going to play it, you're not going to marry me,” Liam recalled her saying.
He later told Men’s Journal: “Women. Foreign countries. Halle Berry. It’s understandable… She was like, ‘You’re going to ruin your career.' But it’s no big deal. It’s nice to be inquired after.”
They married on July 3, 1994, at their farmhouse in Millbrook, New York, in a small ceremony attended by around 70 guests, including Emma Thompson, Steven Spielberg and Mia Farrow.
Natasha wore a gown designed by Donna Karan. During the celebration, she surprised Liam by singing Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love.”
“Behind my back, Natasha had been taking singing lessons to sing it to me,” Liam later said. “I was like, 'Wow!'"
Family and Shared Work
Not long after their wedding, they appeared together in the film Nell. Natasha had actively pursued the role to avoid being apart during filming.
“It was difficult to kind of go, 'Bye, honey! Have fun with the other girls!' ” she said. “I thought I would do anything to play this part.”
Their first son, Micheál, was born on June 22, 1995, followed by Daniel on August 27, 1996. Natasha later spoke about the experience of having two children in quick succession:
“This was a bit unexpected… We wanted more children, just not so close together.”
“As a woman and a mother, I thought, 'Great!' As an actress, I screamed, 'Help!' ”
A Life Cut Short
In March 2009, Natasha fell while skiing at Mont Tremblant in Quebec and hit her head. Although the injury initially appeared minor, her condition worsened.
Recalling their final conversation, Liam said: “I spoke to her, and she said, 'Oh, darling. I've taken a tumble in the snow.' ”
Doctors later told him she was “brain dead.” He remembered saying goodbye: “She was on life support … and [I] told her I loved her. Said, 'Sweetie, you're not coming back from this…' ”
The couple had previously agreed not to prolong life artificially in such circumstances. Natasha, who was an organ donor, donated her heart, kidneys and liver.
Her family confirmed her death on March 18, 2009, at age 45 due to an epidural hematoma. A statement read: “Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated… They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers… and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”
Grief and Moving Forward
In 2014, Liam spoke publicly about Natasha’s death for the first time, describing grief as unpredictable and overwhelming:
“Grief's like — it hits you. It's like a wave… You feel like a three-legged table… the Earth isn't stable anymore.”
He also said that for years, he expected to hear her returning home. Work became a way of coping. “I'm not good without work,” he explained, adding that staying busy helped him support his sons.
Remembering Natasha
In the years since, Liam has continued to speak about Natasha’s presence in his life.
In 2020, he said: “I speak to her every day at her grave… I do speak to her as if she's here. Not that she answers me.”
Their son Micheál later worked alongside him on Made in Italy, a film that drew on their shared experience of grief.
Reflecting in 2025, Liam recalled his early days acting in Anna Christie with Natasha: “It was great doing it every night with her and falling in love.”
He also remembered Natasha telling him about the success of Taken: “She walked up the stairs, giggling, with a tray carrying tea and a bran muffin,” and told him the film “was doing well at the box office.”
