Adrian Edmondson has joined the cast of EastEnders as a new love interest for Jean Slater.

The Bottom and Young Ones star will play Daniel Cook, a 'charming' new arrival who is described as "the perfect antidote" for Jean while she has treatment for ovarian cancer.

Adrian is best known for being one of the biggest comedy stars of the 1980s and 1990s thanks to his partnership with the late Rik Mayall.

In recent years, he has starred in various TV dramas and movies, such as Holby City, Bancroft, War and Peace and The Last Jedi.

On joining EastEnders, Adrian said: “There were only fifteen boys on my drama course at Manchester Uni, and I’ll be the third to appear in EastEnders - so I feel it’s a kind of tradition! The other two being Tom Watt (Lofty Holloway) and Paul Bradley (Nigel Bates)”.

Jon Sen (executive producer at EastEnders) added: “Adrian’s a phenomenal talent who will bring his unique blend of intelligence, warmth and humour to the role of Daniel. We’re all over the moon he’s coming to Walford and can’t wait for this love story to hit screens later this year.”

He has already started filming, with his first appearance on the soap airing this summer.
