Footage has emerged of the moment armed police tackled a man who opened fire in a crowded city centre.

Deraj Meade, 22, was arrested last June for shooting twice on John Bright Street in Birmingham. He was jailed for more than seven years on Thursday.

West Midlands Police released footage of the moment when officers - carrying assault rifles - surrounded Meade's car and arrested him.

Body camera footage shows an officer grab the man from his vehicle before arresting him on 21 June, four days after the shooting.

West Midlands Police's Det Sgt Lucy Mooney said in a statement: "Meade's actions put a large number of innocent people at risk when he decided to fire shots in the street on a busy Saturday night.

"But quick-time investigations saw us detain him within just a matter of days and he is now behind bars."

Meade admitted possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and having ammunition without a certificate.

The 22-year-old was sentenced to seven years and two months at Birmingham Crown Court on 25 April.

He was caught on CCTV arriving in Birmingham city centre just after 10.30pm on 17 June last year.

After leaving a club at 3.10am the next day, he was seen twice firing a gun.

According to the force, Meade was returning fire after he was shot in his left arm by an unknown assailant.
