VOTE: Elton John's 10 Best Songs
Sir Elton John has been one of the biggest recording artists of the last 45 years. We've picked out the 10 biggest songs from his career, but which is your favourite?
1. Rocket Man (1972)
The song that launched Elton John as a pop star was appropriately inspired by a shooting star. The song is about an astronaut heading to Mars and leaving his family behind and has since been covered by more than 20 other artists.
2. Tiny Dancer (1972)
The song was written by his long-time writing partner Bernie Taupin and is meant to capture the spirit of going to nightclubs in California. It’s a classic song now, but only reached No.41 in the US charts and wasn’t actually released as a single in the UK.
3. Candle In The Wind (1974)
The original 1974 version of the song was written about Marilyn Monroe, with the lyrics changed slightly for the 1997 version which commemorated the tragic death of Princess Diana. Between this and the 1997 version it’s the biggest selling single of all time in the UK and US.
4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1976)
Elton’s writing partner Bernie Taupin said ‘The Wizard of Oz’ was the first film he remembers seeing, and the yellow brick from it inspired him to write this song, which is about a desire to get back to his roots.
5. Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (1976)
Incredibly, Elton didn’t have a UK number 1 single until this came out, and it also got him to number 1 on the American Billboard charts. The original plan was for Elton to record the duet with Dusty Springfield, but illness meant he eventually recorded it with Kiki Dee.
6. I’m Still Standing (1983)
One of Elton’s biggest hits of the 1980s, 'I’m Still Standing' was an early hit video on the recently launched television channel MTV. Also, the 'Strictly Come Dancing' judge Bruno Tonioli appears in the video as a backing dancer. Can you spot him?
7. Sacrifice (1989)
Bernie Taupin has said this is one of the best songs he’s ever written, and it also turned out to be Elton’s first solo number 1 UK single.
8. Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (1991)
Elton first recorded this in 1974, but it was the 1991 re-release featuring George Michael that became the definitive version. The pair first sung it together at the Live Aid concert in 1985, and the profits from the 1991 single release were donated to charity.
9. Can You Feel The Love Tonight (1994)
This song, written by Tim Rice, famously appeared in ‘The Lion King’ film and went on to collect the Oscar for Best Original Song.
10. Something About The Way You Look Tonight (1997)
This was released as a double A-side single with ‘Candle In The Wind’ and was also dedicated to the memory of Princess Diana, with all proceeds from the song going to charities that she worked with. The video features celebrities including Kate Moss and Sophie Dahl.
