Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again - "When I Kissed the Teacher” (Lyric Video)

By Tom Eames

Such a bizarre song, but so darn catchy...

The opening number to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is not one of ABBA's more famous tunes, but a great one nonetheless.

'When I Kissed the Teacher' is sung by Lily James as a young Donna, as she graduates from college, while her teachers (including actress Celia Imrie and a certain Bjorn Ulvaeus) watch on in horror.

'When I Kissed the Teacher' was the opening track to ABBA's Arrival album in 1976.

The song's tongue-in-cheek lyrics tell the story of a student who has a crush on her teacher, and one day decides to him. Benny Andersson has previously said that it is one of his favourite ABBA songs.

The original video sees Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad in school uniform, while the teacher is played by Magnus Härenstam, a famous TV host in Sweden who hosted the country's version of Jeopardy.

In the film, the lyrics were slightly altered. The original lyrics were: "One of these days, gonna tell him I dream of him every night, One of these days, gonna show him I care. Gonna teach him a lesson alright.”

Not only was the gender of the teacher changed, but the lyrics altered to: “What a mad day, now I see everything in a different light. What a mad day, I was up in the air. And she taught me a lesson alright.”
