Hollywood actress Emma Stone has revealed she would prefer to be known by her real name - Emily.

The Oscar-winner said Emily is her birth name and she would rather be called that.

The star of La La Land and Poor Things told The Hollywood Reporter she would like fans to know her by original name.

She changed it before becoming famous because there was another actress at the time called Emily Stone, so she changed her first name to Emma.

But Stone said she "freaked out" a couple of years ago and told her colleagues to refer to her as Emily.

When asked how she would react if fans called her Emily, Stone said: "That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily."

Nathan Fielder, her co-star on comedy thriller TV series The Curse, revealed that Emma is the 35-year-old's stage name during the recent interview.

He told how he refers to her as Emily or Em and that she "goes by Emma professionally".

When asked if anyone in the film industry calls her Emily, Stone said: "When I get to know them, people that I work with do [call me Emily]. It's just because my name was taken [by another actress in the Screen Actors Guild].

"Then I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, 'I can't do it anymore. Just call me Emily.' Nathan calls me Em, which is easier."

Stone won the best actress Oscar for comedy fantasy Poor Things last month and previously won the same accolade for romantic musical La La Land in 2016.

Stone previously said on Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show that she wanted to be called Emma when she was at school because she loved the Spice Girls and in particular, singer Emma Bunton.
