Could Queen do it for a third time?

Bookmakers have begun taking bets on the Christmas number one for 2018, and some iconic faces come near the top of the list.

Sir Elton John has been tipped to grab his first ever Christmas number one, according to Ladbrokes.

The singer is thought to be featured in this year's John Lewis Christmas advert, and he now has odds of 4/1 to top the charts on December 25.

Ed Sheeran and Lady Gaga are next in line at 5/1 each, while Queen have odds of 8/1 after the release of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Christmas number one 2018 odds so far:

Elton John - 4/1
Ed Sheeran - 5/1
Lady Gaga - 5/1
Ariana Grande - 6/1
Dalton Harris - 6/1
Queen - 8/1
Spice Girls - 10/1

Ed Sheeran bagged last year's Christmas number one with 'Perfect', despite a spirited effort from George Michael fans to get Wham!'s 'Last Christmas' to the top. In the end, it peaked at number two in the week after Christmas.

Queen have scored two Christmas number ones in the past, both with 'Bohemian Rhapsody', in 1975 and 1991. However, with the film already released and no Queen songs charting yet, this feels unlikely to happen again.

Elton has never had a Christmas number one, so this might be his best chance yet. However, with the rumoured John Lewis advert to be released in early November, it will most likely be far too early for Elton to hang on that long for the festive chart-topper.
