Ringo Starr says The Beatles were meant to record another album

The Beatles were in talks to make another album after their Abbey Road LP, a newly discovered tape revealed.

An explosive tape recorded by the band has revealed the band were in the process of a follow-up album, but tensions between band members got in the way.

Ringo Starr, 79, has now spoken publicly about the album discussions, confirming Abbey Road was not meant to be their last.

Speaking to the BBC, Ringo said: “We did do Abbey Road and we was like, ‘Okay that’s pretty good’. But none of us said, ‘Okay, that’s the last time we’ll ever play together’. Nobody said that. I never felt that.

“We’d made this record, and then we would go off and do whatever we wanted to do. And then Paul would call us and say, ‘Hey, you want to go in the studio lads?’ and we’d do another one.

“So it was not the end – because in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make. So I never felt it was in stone.”

Rock historian Mark Lewisohn gave The Guardian access to a tape of a meeting held 50 years where The Beatles could be heard squabbling, having just finished recording their Abbey Road album.

While Let It Be would prove to be The Beatles' final album in 1970, it was actually recorded before Abbey Road in 1969.

The newly discovered tape was recorded in the building by John Lennon for drummer Ringo who was undergoing hospital tests for an intestinal complaint.

In his latest interview with the broadcaster, Ringo also opened up about working once more with Paul McCartney for ‘What’s My Name’.

He said: “It’s the best. I love playing with him. We played a lot together in ‘that band’ and he’s still in the most melodic player. He’s still incredible, for me, I feel the emotion when [he] plays.”
